Stroll, Walks and Hikes Inspired by Books
As my friends' daughter takes off for a summer travel along the Appalachian Trail, I came across an NPR story by Mara Alpert to encourage children's field trips and exploration. It got me wondering about books to encourage adventure, and groups to encourage children's hikes.

There's the first walking summit coming up in October in Washington DC. 'To join the movement about movement' plan to attend the Every Body Walk! 2013 Summit. You will join national and local leaders to engage in inspiring conversations and sessions that will build capacity, develop strategies, increase momentum and showcase best practices to increase investments in walkability and walking. This event will model how to integrate walking and physical activity into a conference format, including a "hill and agency walking day."
Who Should Attend
Movements are born out of collaboration. America Walks are looking to bring together Every Body Walk! partners, nonprofit, civic and business leaders along with new allies who can share news, views and ideas to boost the prevalence of walking and walkable communities.
The Agenda for the Walking Summit:
October 1:Capacity and Skill Building Sessions on topics of interest to local, state and national leaders. Focused roundtable dialogues for mayors, corporate leaders, equity and human rights proponents, main street businesses and developers. Opening Reception to be held at the Kaiser Permanente Center for Total Health.
October 2: Expert keynote addresses, interactive workshops, advocacy training and engagement in building the movement. Of course, there will be walking meetings, healthy meals, also stretch breaks, and even a little dancing.
October 3: Congressional and agency visits, policy briefings and strategy development to build new allies.
